Fifteen years of hands-on work, turned into one method

Fifteen years of hands-on experience, turned into a unique method for fabricating and installing decorative aluminum pergolas. The method was developed over 15 years to prevent costly mistakes, save time and money, and pass on to you the knowledge and techniques gathered along the way.

It took shape through practical work, through mistakes that cost money and through corrections made over the years.

  • Avoid costly mistakesKnow where errors usually happen (measuring, ordering, preparation and installation) and plan for them.
  • Less waste, fewer repeat ordersAn accurate bill of quantities means fewer shortfalls, less excess and fewer repeat deliveries.
  • An organized way of workingThe same clear order of work, from the first site visit to handover.
  • Confidence on the jobA structured approach instead of discovering every process by trial and error.

Learn From Our Experience, Not From Your Most Expensive Mistakes.

On a fabrication and installation job, small errors add up quickly. The mistakes the method is designed to help you recognize and avoid include:

  • Incorrect measurements
  • Unnecessary material waste
  • Ordering unsuitable materials
  • Incorrect preparation
  • Rework and wasted labor
  • Installation complications
  • Project delays
  • Unexpected expenses

How a systematic approach helps: measuring and drawing before ordering, preparing an accurate material take-off, and following the same proven sequence on every job reduce the chances of these problems. No training can remove every risk, but knowing where mistakes usually happen lets you plan for them.

TECHNICOLLEGE · METHOD ROADMAP

TechniCollege Method Roadmap — Eight Stages and Their Value to the Client

Each station shows what the learner studies, why it matters, and the financial or professional value they gain — based on the explanations and examples provided.

START · Tools and Materials
  1. STAGE 01

    Client Meeting and Pergola Brief

    What will you learn?

    • Identifying the client’s requirements and understanding their needs.
    • Assessing site conditions.
    • Choosing colors, profiles and roofing types together with the client.
    • Matching the pergola configuration to the client’s wishes and the site conditions.
    • Developing an initial plan together with the client.
    Value to the learner:

Learn how to conduct a professional meeting, present the options that suit the client, and agree on a clear initial direction for the project before planning and carrying out the work.

  2. STAGE 02

    Work Planning and On-Site Measurements

    What will you learn?

    • Selecting the pergola structure suited to the site conditions.
    • Determining where posts are required and where tension supports may be considered.
    • Planning post positions and the distances between them.
    • Reviewing connection options to the existing building.
    • Taking accurate measurements and recording site dimensions.
    Value to the learner:

Learn how to plan the pergola around the site’s constraints instead of starting work without a clear plan. Proper planning can prevent mistakes, costly changes during installation, and wasted time and materials.

  3. STAGE 03

    Pergola Drawings and Work Processes

    What will you learn?

    • Preparing a pergola drawing based on the measurements taken on site.
    • Determining the types and dimensions of the profiles.
    • Producing a cutting plan from the drawing.
    • Planning the cutting sequence.
    • Setting the order of operations and work stages according to priorities.
    Value to the learner:

Turn measurements into a practical, organized work plan. Know in advance what to cut, to which dimensions and in what order, helping reduce cutting mistakes, save raw materials and make better use of working time.

  4. STAGE 04

    Material Quantities and Accurate Ordering

    What will you learn?

    • Calculating the quantities of profiles required for the project.
    • Calculating screws, connections and auxiliary materials.
    • Preparing a complete materials list for ordering.
    • Planning quantities so materials arrive at the site in a consolidated delivery.
    • Preventing shortages and excessive orders.
    Value to the learner:

This is where direct financial savings can be made. Ordering too little material may require another order and delivery, increasing costs and reducing profitability. Ordering too much means paying for surplus material and finding somewhere to store it. Accurate calculations aim to reduce both problems and protect the profit on the project.

  5. STAGE 05

    Strength, Stability and Reinforcement Principles

    What will you learn?

    • Understanding the structural strength principles of the pergola.
    • Matching profile types to the structure and site conditions.
    • Understanding the role of posts and tension supports.
    • Reviewing the positions of connections and reinforcements.
    • Learning about the effects of wind loads and safety requirements.
    Value to the learner:

Understand how profile selection, post placement, connections and reinforcements affect pergola stability and resistance to wind. This helps the learner recognize important structural considerations and understand when design and approval by a qualified engineer are required.

  6. STAGE 06

    Roof Slope and Water Drainage

    What will you learn?

    • Planning the slope required for the pergola.
    • Matching the slope to the roofing type.
    • Planning the direction of water flow and drainage.
    • Understanding the relevant slope requirements.
    • Reducing the risk of standing water and rainwater ingress.
    Value to the learner:

Learn to plan pergola roof slopes so rainwater drains correctly. This helps reduce leaks, standing water, repeat repairs and customer complaints after installation.

Notes for the United States

  • Stage 1: The forms shown in the course are not US forms. Requirements for home improvement contracts, and the consumer protections that apply to them, are set by each state.
  • Stage 5: This stage does not teach US building codes, wind or snow load design, or structural engineering, and it is not engineering advice. Structural requirements depend on the building code adopted where the pergola is built; where required, a licensed engineer should confirm the design, member sizes and fasteners for your site.
  • Stage 7: Use the safety equipment and safe work practices required by the workplace safety rules that apply to you (for example, OSHA standards).
  • Stage 8: Fastening into existing structures and footings must suit your site and be confirmed by the design for that job.

Training, licensing and permits in the United States

Not a qualification or license

This is private training from TechniCollege. It is not accredited, is not recognized by any state or federal agency and does not lead to a qualification, certification or contractor license.

Licenses for paid work

Many states, and some cities and counties, require a contractor or home improvement license to build for others, often depending on the type and value of the work. Check with your state licensing board and your local building department before quoting.

Permits and engineering

Whether a pergola needs a building permit depends on its size, height, roof, attachment to the house, location on the lot and your local building code and zoning rules. Structural design must suit local wind and snow loads; get engineering advice where your project requires it.

Materials and methods

Profiles and fasteners shown in the videos are not from the US market. Don't assume they meet US code requirements. Confirm product data and suitability with your supplier and, where required, an engineer.
